Emergency Preparedness
Background
Each station applicant, when applying for a license, specifically pledges to operate the station (if granted) in the maximum manner of the public interest in and around it's "City of License" meaning Gig Harbor, the Key Peninsula, and surrounding territory.
This, of course, means "operating in the public interest" to the extent either officially desired by those in charge in the case of Emergency and/or as any Emergency issues present themselves.
As Emergencies can be almost anything these days our concentration must be on BEING READY, WILLING, AND ABLE TO FOLLOW AND DISSEMINATE OFFICIAL GOVERNMENTAL NEWS, INFORMATION, AND INSTRUCTIONS AS PROVIDED BY AUTHORIZED GOVERNMENTAL AUTHORITIES.
We carry this assignment out by having a main transmitter and translator always on the air, an operational studio on 24-hour availability, diesel generator power supplies for all of the above, and active membership in "PEP-C", the Peninsula Emergency Preparedness Committee. In this we are teamed with Pierce County Emergency Services, Fire District 16, Fire District 5, Peninsula Light Company, The Telephone Company, Pierce County Road District 3, The City of Gig Harbor, and a secondary connection to FEMA, headquartered at McChord AFB.
